Boy With Lotus is inspired by the story of the Red Boy (Hồng Hài Nhi) from the 16th-century novel, Journey to the West. The Red Boy is portrayed as fiercely independent, possessing the power of True Samadhi- the ability to shoot fire and smoke from his eyes, nostrils, and mouth. Though ultimately subdued by the Buddha, he later attained divine status after saving many lives.
